I have been seeking to implement this policy: “Look, don’t think”. It generally takes longer to look than it does to think. It requires (for me) more effort to go look something up, to check it, to find the reference I need. Thinking (among other things) is an effort to confront something without actually looking at it.
So I’ve been looking harder at what we do for our clients at Words in a Row when we build and optimize websites, or perform marketing of one kind or another, so that we aren’t doing things just for the sake of ritual because it once worked. Some of the things we have discovered by looking have been very enlightening and will save us time in the future.
L. Ron Hubbard has (as usual) some pretty good advice about this subject, from the book “The Way to Happiness“. He says: “Look. See what you see, not what someone tells you that you see. What you observe is what you observe. Look at things and life and others directly, not through any cloud of prejudice, curtain of fear or the interpretation of another.”
Look, don’t think. It’s my new motto.
I’m trying to get one of my clients to look—to survey his public and ask them questions (marketing research). It’s an effort to look, which leads to knowing. I don’t know what thinking leads to (confusion, maybe?) but I know what looking gets you.
